copyright issues

I’m stuck on the copyright issue. I thought I could ignore it and just work away. But I’ve realised that I have to determine whether I can do this at all without major legal headaches. So if anyone out there is an expert at international copyright law and wants to anwser some pro bono =P questions let me know.

Basically I need to know about the copyright issues involved with using copyright titles if I were to commission new covers and public domain titles, does that extend to the covers?

Peronally I prefer forums to blogs for conversation but I’m easy as far as where it happens. I’ll be posting all my updates to the blog from now on.

Game Chef ’09

This is my new Game Chef ’09 blog for my card game about books, arguments and one-ups-personship. I’ve never participated in Game Chef before. I’m doing this in order to help me get the motivation to try and get my idea from and idea to a finished and playable game.

The game is played with a custom deck of cards. Each card displays a book cover. Players play cards against each other and try and win arguments using the content (or made up content) of their book/card in order to win.

Wishlist:

These are elements I would like to include but I’m not sure how to do so yet.

Multiplayer (more than two)
Fiction and Non-fiction
There may also be another deck cards with catagories on them. The catagories would be able to be chosen or randomly determined for competition between players, basically used to start argements.
Or the reverse side of the book cover cards could be printed with a number of catagories that could be invoked by a player in order to play the card.
I’d like to use original book covers if possible
Or take submissions from a wide variety of artists (preferably people would want to nominate a book or two they had been inspired by and produce a new “cover” for it.

That’s all I’ve got for now.
